11 NAR Rocketry Safety Rules

1. Materials: I will use only lightweight, non-metal parts for the nose, body, and fins of my rocket.

2. Motors: I will use only certified, commercially-made model rocket motors, and will not tamper with these motors or use them for any purposes except those recommended by the manufacture.

3. Ignition System: I will launch my rockets with an electrical launch system and electrical motor igniters.

4. Launch Safety: I will use a countdown before launch, and will insure that everyone is paying attention and is a safe distance of at least 15 feet away when I launch rockets with D motors or smaller, and 30 feet away when I launch larger rockets.

5. Misfires: If my rocket does not launch when I press the button of my electrical launch system, I will remove the launcher's safety interlock or disconnect its battery before allowing anyone to approach the rocket.

6. Launcher: I will launch my rockets from a launch rod, tower, or rail to insure that the rocket flies nearly strait up. I will use a blast deflector to prevent the motor's exhaust from hitting the ground, and I will cap the end of my launch rod when it is not in use.

7. Size: If my model rocket weighs more than one pound (453 grams) at liftoff or has more power than a single G motor, I will check and comply with Federal Aviation Administration regulations before flying.

8. Flight Safety: I will not launch my rocket at targets or near airplanes, and will not put any flammable or explosive payload in my rocket.

9. Launch Site: I will launch my rocket outdoors, and in an open area and in safe weather conditions (*LITTLE OR NO WIND) and will ensure that there is no dry grass close to the launch pad (*OR IN THE FLYING FIELD).

10. Recovery System: I will use a recovery system such ad a streamer or parachute in my rocket so that it returns safely and undamaged and can be flown again, and I will use only flame-resistant or fireproof recovery system wadding in my rocket.

11. Recovery Safety: I will not attempt to recover my rocket from power lines, tall trees, or other dangerous places.

Airfoil

The definition of airfoil is fairly simple. It is somthing that is designed to or does cut through the air (ex. a wing).

Attitude Gyro

The attitude gyro is a gage that tells you if you are banking or going up or down. Some people call it the "Artificial horizon." But it is basically a ball on gimbals.

True and Magnetic North

The way compassass work is by a needle spinning around the earth's magnetic feild. But the magnetic feild is off and so true north is actually a little off of magnetic north. Thats the difference between magnetic and true north.

Reflection

Overall I thought that this week was AWSOME. I do not think that next year you should change anything because it was really fun making the planes and adding to them to try and make them better. However, after a while I got board of him saying that "You can not have fun because fun is the enemy of learning." I know that it was a joke but it got old after a while. For next year I think that you should keep it the same because the students next year will enjoy it as well.

Red Baron

The question is why is the red baron's plane red? The answer is simple. His plane was red because he was a squadron leader and usually squadron leaders painted there planed different so that everyone knew who was in charge.

DATUM

If you ever become a search and rescue agent then you might here the word DATUM. This means the last known position or current position of your target.

The symbol for DATUM is a triangle on top of an upside down triangle or an hourglass.

Ruben H. Fleet

Ruben H. Fleet is a very famous man. He was the man who started the air mail service and he designed and created an airplane for sport (doing tricks and pleasure of flying). That's why he is so famous.

Occam's Razor

Occam's Razor is "whenever one can remove the impossible, what remains, however unlikely, [leads to] the truth." You can use this in your everyday life because you might be looking for somebody or trying to find out what happened to your backpack.

7 Words

Yaw-The action in which the nose of a plane moves left and right.
Pitch-The action in which the nose of a plane moves up and down.
Roll-The action in which the wings of a plane banks left and right.
Dihedral-Where the wings of a plane are bent up into a V shape.
Static-Static is where something doesn't change or move.
Dynamic-Dynamic is where something moves or is not fixed.
Aerodynamic-This is where something is made to easly move throughout the air with minimal drag.

Theorys of Flight

There are three theorys as to what generates lift. The first one is the Bernoulli Effect. The Bernoulli effect is where the wing is curved at the top and the air speeds up when it goes over the top and doesn't go as fast when it travles along the bottom creating low air presure on top and high air presure on the bottom creating lift (below).
The second theory is the Newtonian Theory. The Newtonian Theory is when the wing is given an angle of attack the wing basicly skips over the air keeping it's self in the air (below).
The third is the cerculation theory. This is that when the wing is given an angle of attack the air moves slower on the bottom still and the air creates high presure creating lift.

Scientific Method in Foam Gliders

For our foam gliders we used the scientific method. Observation: We observed the gliders unmodified and standard. Question: What would happen if I modified my glider to make it better. Hypothesis: If I modified my glider then it will fly better. Experiment: We tested our gliders again to see if they fly better or worse. Conclusion: My glider flew more stable and flew straiter but not as far and fast after I modified it.

Foam flyer improvements

My foam flyer was one of the best modifyed. It didn't go very far but it was very stable and flew strait. I didn't modify it very much like a lot of people did and it didn't help it go further or faster but I added winglets and it helped it a lot to stabalize it. The only thing that it didn't help is going faster and further.

My definition of flight

My definition of flight is mainly the same as what a dictionary would say. Flight is where an object is moving above the ground and is actually being supported by the air and is not just balisticly moving through the air.

4 Forces of flight

The four forces of flight are Lift, Drag, Gravity, and Thrust. Without Thrust the plane would not move and no air would go over the and under the wings to create lift. So thust keep the plane moving and keeps it in the air. Lift is the most important. Lift is what keeps the airplane up in the air. Lift is caused by air going over the wing and the Branulli affect causing lift. Gravity may seem like it would not help the plane to fly, but it actually plays a key role because without gravity the plane would just keep going up and up and never come down. The last is drag. Drag is the force that pushes against the plane when it is flying. Without Drag the plane would never make it into the air because drag is air pushing on the plane and without drag there is no air and without air the plane couldn't fly at all.
